As a machine builder we believe the right way to keep in touch with our customers is to meet up with them, offline or online, in the office, or on jobsites! Just before the holiday season our marketing manager Elsedien met up with Cor Versluis, drilling executor at Van Vulpen, a company situated in Gorinchem, the Netherlands. We were happy that Cor, made time for her to personally show her a unique jobsite hidden in the Dutch dunes.

On December 5th we visited the company Van Vulpen. This time no conversation with a driller, CEO or director, but a meeting with a real boss! Cor Versluis has been working at Van Vulpen since 1991 and has been drilling for 30 years. His modest job title ‘drilling executor’ suits his character, but less so the impressive projects that Cor has completed. In addition to completing the longest drilling of 2,300 meters in the Netherlands in his hometown Meerkerk, there are countless projects with which he has earned the necessary respect from his peers and colleagues.

He has seen the company grow and develop over the years. Where he started with a small drilling rig on tracks and 3-4 people staff, the company grew in personnel, size of drilling rigs and size of projects. The mentality of Cor and his team has not changed, the organizational structure of the company has; now that there is more than 600 permanent employees

Unique project, hidden behind the Dutch dunes

At the project we visited, two electric Prime Drilling rigs are drilling towards each other, a so-called intersect drilling. The drilling goes under the dunes, with a length of 820 and 856 meters. They are carried out by a 230 tonner on one side and a 300 tonner on the other side. In the protected dune area of Wijk aan Zee, only electric drill rigs are allowed to run. The use of electric rigs makes a significant difference in reducing nitrogen emissions on the project. Cor explains he has been very satisfied with Prime Drilling electric rigs since 2019. They require less maintenance, work quieter and more efficiently. SiteTec’s electrical mixing unit, the M2002E, is also located at the jobsite and has been working on larger projects at Van Vulpen since 2008. Besides this unit, a SiteTec pumping unit P2500D is running, one of the first units that SiteTec built 20 years ago. A sturdy unit that Cor believes will last a while longer. He has been working with SiteTec units for many years and proudly remembers that he came up with the design of the MP750E together with Corné years ago. A mix pump unit that contributed to the success of Van Vulpen. The unit with many operating hours, has successfully completed many projects and was fully overhauled last year. A design to be proud of for Cor, but definitely also for Corné. After the first design, several more followed, units that Van Vulpen still works with every day.

We are van Vulpen

It is good to hear from Cor that even with the changed organizational structure, he can indicate with which machines he needs to deliver the work. He gets the needed trust which is necessary for challenging projects like this in Wijk aan Zee. It is a project where no risks should be taken. Needless to say, the number of drillings in  protected dune area will be minimized by the contracting authority TenneT and carefully thought through by Van Vulpen. With a guarantee of 0 risk and a high accuracy of the intersect of 0.50 meters, Van Vulpen distinguishes itself from their competitors. “We are van Vulpen” is rightly their proud slogan. The preliminary phase and preparation is longer than with other projects, but the implementation is therefore proceeding with the desired precision and on schedule. For example, a mound has been created on the beach, reinforced with sheet pile walls, which even withstood the storm a few weeks ago. The mound was constructed to avoid the difference in height between the two locations and thus to eliminate the risk of loss or leakage of bentonite in the protected area. The drillings that are being carried out are for wind farms in the North Sea. A nice contrast while we are literally standing in the smoke of the big Dutch steel factory of Tata Steel.

Teamwork

During our conversation, the driller and other operators from the team also walk into the canteen to warm up, the wind from the North Sea is not mild. It is good to see that within such a large organization, this drill team is very close together. Even when Cor is not on site, the boys continue to run smoothly. He likes to pass on his knowledge and skills to the next generation, but he also shows his confidence in them. Going karting together next week, the Van Vulpen Christmas BBQ, and then spending time with family and friends at Christmas is something they are all looking forward to! Van Vulpen mainly carries out their work in the Benelux, and they all seem to really appreciate the drive back home in the evening; and so does the home front!

Thank you Cor for your time and the nice conversation! And showing us this impressive project on a unique location.

Proud to present this R1500E recycling unit, specially designed for our British customer OCU Trenchless. A project commissioned by our well appreciated UK dealer TA drilling.

The fully electric compact recycling unit with a capacity of 1500 ltr/min  is equipped with Derrick Corporation shaker and screens. We are proud of the trust that a prestigious company like Derrick Corporation put in to SiteTec for building and incorporating their world class shakers in the strong base and solid design of a SiteTec unit. With Ben Clark -global manager at Derrick Corporation- seeing the end result in our workshop and commenting that in this unit: “Best of both worlds come together;” is a big compliment.

Design recycling unit

The unit is a system of hydro-cyclones, shaker and screens, collectively referred to as solids removal equipment. It separates solids out of the fluid. With a maximum of 20% incoming solids and less than 1% going out @ 60 sec viscosity 1.2 gr/cc spec. gravity. It recirculates reusable fluids, consisting of bentonite, water and other additives, back into the active fluid system: this is a closed loop. The design of this R1500E has lots of screen surface, the biggest separation volume wise is done on the shaker. The first separation of the fluid is on the polyurethan screens. After that the fluid goes to the hydro cyclones, with the final separation on the stainless pyramid screens. Since most separation is done on the shaker, the unit needs less pumping capacity for the hydro cyclones. Which makes it a unit with lots of capacity, using little power consumption.

Derrick shaker

The shaker on the R1500E is a Derricks FLC shaker. A high-capacity, dual-deck, four panel per deck, vibrating screen machine. Dual vibrating motors rotate in opposite directions to produce linear motion of the screen beds. This recycling unit has a mechanical screw jack adjust while drilling. This permits the screen frame angle to be raised or lowered to optimize the flow rate across the screening beds in response to changing slurry conditions. Screen tensioning is provided by a rapid change draw bolt tensioning system, the box feeder provides an even distribution of slurry across the entire width of the screen frame. The unit is equipped with a 10-way inline desilter for removing 10- to 74 micron solids.

The sloped tank bottom and pump in the recycling unit is there for fluids to be circulated non-stop to prevent settlement. The on board transfer pump, pumps the clean fluid to the mixing unit, or recirculates in the pit. Hydro cyclones are fed by the circulation pump on the back of the unit.

Like all other SiteTec units, the R1500E is easy to operate and easily accessible for maintenance. Our small footprint units are logistically highly efficient. This unit is equipped after customers request with a hook arm system suitable for the OCU Trenchless fleet.

Complete set

This recyling unit is part of a complete set we have built for OCU Trenchless. Including a Genset on a flatbed with a 200 kVa Volvo Group diesel engine. The unit is fully sound insulated and has powerlocks for a quick, easy and safe connection. And a mixing unit M1500D, a unit with a capacity of 1500 liters per minute, powered by a stage V JCB diesel engine. The unit is equipped with a hook arm system, which makes it easy for transport and a quick setup. It also has extra space for big bags or for pallets with 25 kg bags, but still offers enough safe workingspace for the operator.

We wish OCU Trenchless many succesfull drilling meters!

As a machine builder we believe the right way to keep in touch with our customers is to meet up with them, offline or online, in the office, or on jobsites! After the holiday our marketing manager Elsedien met up with Aart Vreugdenhil, the proud owner off Welvreugd, a drilling company situated in Maasland, the Netherlands. We were happy that Aart, made time for her to personally introduce Welvreugd and talk about their goals and vision.

It is great talking to Aart about his pride and passions in his beautiful office. Not just the company, lots of projects, his enthusiastic and skilled team, his children, cycling and snowboarding; all different subjects pass the revenue. Workwise he is proud of all different projects, because: “Every job has its charm.” And SiteTec is proud that we have been able to build machines for Welvreugd for the past 20 years. From mixing units, recycling units, storage units and the first 2500 liter electric pump unit, to the recycling units that run for Welvreugd on site and on its own property. We are currently working on a fully electric mix pump installation for Welvreugd, which we hope to be able to deliver quickly!

But let’s go back to where it all started:

54 years ago Kees Vreugdenhil started the company Welvreugd in the agricultural sector. All horticulturists and greenhouse owners knew where to find them in the middle of the Maasland. Earth-moving activities were expanded with excavation work and mechanical tillage and Welvreugd has steadily grown in the specialism of cables and pipes and everything that comes with it. After high school, Aart, then 16, started working for his father’s company. Because directional drilling would be the future; a Straightline drilling rig came to the company. Aart was told that he could make this machine his own. And that, and more, has happened in the last 34 years! The urge to prove that this was a success has ensured that Welvreugd is where it is today: a recognized specialist in the engineering and implementing of directional drilling.

Family business

Welvreugd now has 5 drilling teams, which are fully electric equipped except for the Drill rig. Even with almost 40 employees, Welvreugd remains a family business in heart and soul! His sister Paula and brother-in-law Piet Koole are in the company, but also his son Sil works for Welvreugd. Aart’s brother works on a self-employed base for the company. Not just the family involved in the business makes it a family business, but also the flat organizational structure is typical. The short lines of communication, which shortens the decision making process. That is why small companies also know where to find Welvreugd. 50% of the orders still come from the horticultural sector, nationally and internationally. We don’t often hear about Welvreugd’s international adventures. “This is not our ambition.” Aart explains. “International assignments are beautiful and adventurous, but not a goal in itself.”

Future of drilling

Aart is proud of the developments in Drilling industry, where Welvreugd can contribute to innovative and sustainable projects. Aart indicates that the collaboration with other parties is really a positive market development. Everyone has their own specialty, knowledge and skills, but if you can merge design and output, you can achieve much more! For example, in an assignment where 2.5 km deep is drilled for geothermal energy projects. The heat emitted from the greenhouses is used to provide entire residential areas with district heating. The ultimate goal is to make the heat consumption in the greenhouses for cultivation even more sustainable. By connecting the Westland Heat System, the heat is mutually exchangeable. Looking at these developments, the rich history of this amazing family business and their impressive machine park; we believe the future looks bright for Welvreugd! Thanks again Aart, for letting us take a look inside your beautiful company!
